Thoughtful prayer is a deeply explored subject and there is no dearth of sources on the Internet or at offline locations covering the topic. Reading various books and articles would answer the questions relating to the purpose and benefits of meditation, and will also suggest the different methods of approach. The information being sought must emanate from a variety of sources, as it is not wise to narrow down the approach or rely on an individual's singular idea.
Unfortunately, most people do not give themselves time or choose the right time for practice. The best time, ideally, is late at night or early morning, when it is usually more quiet and peaceful. As far as the session's length goes, 10 to 20 minutes must be aimed first. The time period can be gradually built up later.

Instead, sitting with the legs folded comfortably or being seated on a chair with the feet grounded should do fine.
The practice session must begin only after getting rid of distractions, if any. To relax, the muscles can be stretched, or some soft music can be played. Breath control can also help with calming and relaxing the body.
The need to meditate may come along with its set of goals and requirements. Once the goal formation is done or when there is clarity in that regard, finding the best ways to achieving them should be the next goal.
